lina yawned, leaning back in her chair so that it balanced precariously on two legs. she inconspicuously glanced at the clock from her spot in the back of the room. she sat in the same spot in every single class, mostly because she could doze off and all without the teacher catching her, or at least not the majority of the time. tick. tick. tick. she watched with lazy eyes as the second hand of the clock crept toward the twelve. two more rounds, two more minutes until this damn class was over and lunch would begin. she cursed her luck for having history right before lunch. but of course, lina, being lina, would never have her appetite ruined by such an insignificant thing. besides, she had finished her bag of crackers after first period and she was starving by now.
finally, after what seemed like another ten minutes, the bell rang, and lina sprang out of the seat. she was always the first one to the door, to her teacher’s disappointment. in the halls, lina merged into the mass exodus of bustling kids exiting their classrooms and heading to the cafeteria. some were going frustratingly slowly, and they looked like underclassmen, so lina pushed past them. frickin’ kids. she couldn’t believe she worked with them, but then again, there was a difference between five-year-olds and freshman in high school.
on the way, lina passed a few friends, who waved at her to joint them. it looked like they were planning to go out for lunch today, but surprisingly, lina wasn’t in the mood. she waved back, gesturing that she would be eating in the cafeteria. perhaps she would leave school after that though. there was a test today in calculus and having not studied, lina didn’t especially feel like sitting through that crap. not that she ever studied. yes, she would leave after lunch. maybe go out and buy herself another meal and go visit the studio. frankly, in her opinion, school was the worst place she could possibly be at right now, and if it wasn’t for her parents, she would have given up on it a long while ago.
lina picked her lunch up from her locker and walked through the double doors of the cafeteria. the large room was already filled with students chatting, studying, and eating; students who actually gave a shit about this place. lina was only here for the friends, for her parents, and maybe for the food, but just occasionally. sighing and hoisting her almost empty backpack over her shoulders, she scanned the room with casual green eyes. it seemed all her friends were out. perhaps she could just find someone else to sit with today.

++ frustration second One second, two seconds, one minute, two...
The drawling of a teacher almost no one payed attention to.
Five seconds, six seconds, five minutes, six...
Something about numbers, it seemed. Was this Math class? No, it was something else. As one of the laziest students when it came to most schoolwork in her section, Yuugamisora Airi rarely payed attention to lectures, and now even the name of the subject she was supposed to be learning escaped her. She doodled on a blank page, indifferent.
Eight seconds, nine seconds...
An hour passed by quickly, or perhaps too slowly to some, its end marked by the ringing of a bell. Lunch. Everyone else stowed away their things and got up, and even Airi's stomach grumbled with her hunger, but the brunette stayed where she was. She was now preoccupied. Though, 'obsessed' seemed to be the more proper term.
She hissed, just barely stopping herself from crumpling the paper before her and throwing it in the trash can. "It's all wrong!" She wailed. The few of her classmates who remained stared at the girl for a moment, but they were used to her rather sudden outbursts by now. They continued on with whatever it was that they were doing as Airi furiously erased the last few lines she had made.
Her doodle from earlier had been turning out quite well in her opinion, and she'd decided to use it as an exercise to master perspective. It was always one of the hardest things for her, along with hands and feet, and she believed she needed much, much more practice with it. The pose she was working with now was a simple one: just a girl standing, hands hanging loosely at her sides, the only part that made it tricky was the fact that she was supposed to be seen from above. Like a bird's-eye view. And the 16-year-old artist just couldn't get the legs right! It was either too small to look okay, or too big that it made the girl-drawing seem short-legged instead.
Had she had any friends, there would be nothing to show them today. Nothing to be proud of.
Dejected, Airi put away her things and got up, getting her lunch as she made her way to the cafeteria. Though she would have much rather stayed in the classroom to eat, where it was more peaceful, the room would only make her feel more down about her previous failure. The brunette just wanted to forget that right now. She shuffled through the doors of the large, noisy place, and after finding an empty table near the door, she sighed and sat down. She felt hungry, yes, but after taking out her food, she only nibbled on her rice.

lina swept the room once more, waiting for something to catch her eye. she groaned. maybe she should’ve gone out with her friends after all. just as she turned to walk out and catch up to them, her eyes fell on a girl sitting by the door, all by herself. she looked to be a few years younger…maybe a freshman. or a sophomore. wait. lina squinted at the girl behind her glasses. that was the girl in one of her classes, wasn’t it? what was her name again? lina cursed her bad memory, scratching her chin as she frowned in thought. yuu-something…nami? no. no, it was definite ari. yes, that was it. seeing as it was already ten or so minutes into the period, lina decided to go sit by the girl.
as lina approached, she swung her lunch bag around her index finger, eyeing the girl. she was barely eating and looked rather depressed. lina frowned. there was no way someone could be eating and depressed. those two words could never appear in the same sentence in her mind. she bent down in front of the girl, who seemed to be rather distant, nibbling away at her rice. lina's right eyebrow went up. this girl clearly needed some company. besides, this wasn’t the first time lina had seen her eating alone.
”oi ari, you mind if i sit here?” then, without waiting for the girl’s response, lina pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. she plopped her bag on the table and took out her lunch, which consisted of a large bowl of fried rice and half a small carrot cake. she'd made the fried rice herself that morning. cooking was one of the activities she didn’t mind doing, although it was a pity that her cooking was terrible and she was the only one that actually ate the food she made. ”man, i am starving!” shoveling down a huge bite of sticky rice, lina chewed and watched airi.
”so,” she began again, mouth still full. ”i saw ‘at oo ‘ere eatin’ awone.” she swallowed the mouthful and washed it down with some coffee from the bottle she carried around with her. ”ya can’t enjoy food alone and ya looked a little down, so i came to join you!” lina grinned widely at airi. ”what’s up? why ya so sad?”

++ confusion fourth The endless chatter in the large room was easy enough for the brunette to drown out; much easier than the few voices that would usually interrupt the silence in the classroom. Since Airi had effectively made the cafeteria seem like a quiet room in her mind, the sudden call and question of someone close-by nearly made the girl jump. But she didn't look at the one who'd shouted; after all, her name wasn't 'Ari.'
A chair across from Airi screeched on the floor, a black-haired girl wearing glasses sat down on it, and a lunch bag was brought down on the table. The newcomer, most likely older than the 16-year-old, pulled out her own food, a rather large bowl of rice and what looked like a part of some kind of cake. After declaring her hunger, a big chunk of the rice found its way into her mouth, much to the sophomore's amazement.
Now, it wasn't as if the whole event didn't surprise her. Since that first moment she realized she really was the 'Ari' who had been called in the beginning, the young artist's eyes had widened and the comparatively small portion of rice she had between her chopsticks had stayed just at the opening of her mouth. Which she had yet to close as well. She blinked as her 'companion' took a drink from a bottle she'd been carrying, and struggled to compose herself.
"I-i... uhhh..." Airi's voice seemed hoarse even to her own ears. She cleared her throat as softly as she could, fidgeting a bit in discomfort as she took a gulp from a bottle of her own. Lowering her head at the words and grin she was given, she frowned at her lap.
How did this happen? She wondered, now staring at the older girl from under her bangs. It wasn't as though she didn't appreciate the actions, she just didn't like being with strangers.
Speaking of strangers, was this strange girl before her really someone she'd never met before? She brought her hands down to her lap, which she stared at again, furrowing her brow in concentration. Was this girl familiar to her? Had she seen her before? She didn't seem to be a classmate... and she had gotten her name wrong. Though, there was really no reason for anyone to remember her name at all. She never stood out or talked to anyone. Heck, she didn't even know how this girl had even noticed her here in the first place!
She looked up, trying to smile like she always did to seem somewhat polite to others, and answered the question she'd been asked. "It's nothing really." She took up her chopsticks again and ate a bit more, in the back of her mind still marveling at how the other girl had first tackled her lunch.
"...Have we met before?" She wasn't usually the one to ask questions, and she was confused as to why she had said anything at all. But it changed the subject, which was nice. Airi looked at the black-haired girl again, tilting her head a bit to the left. What would she say?
Words: 517;; Notes: But Airi doesn't know anyone else's names at all! >o< And apparently I still have muse when I'm stressed o:

lina had always had a soft spot for the quieter, smaller kids who seemed to have nobody around for them. perhaps it was because they reminded her of the kids back at the studio. she knew there were a select few who would always stay away, would never step forward without encouragement, and lina had to talk with them one on one with that soft and laughing tone she had perfected over the years. to be honest, some of her favorite kids were the ones who first came in all shy and unreachable. sure, all the children were precious to her, and she rarely acted the same way around anyone else, but the quiet little ones were just too sweet. she loved watching them grow up and reach out little by little. and being able to pinch their cheeks was always a plus.
this girl…didn’t seem to be exactly like the kids; she was definitely more confident, more independent. but for the moment when airi raised her head, lina thought she could see the trace of insecurity. or maybe it was loneliness. lina couldn’t quite place it, but she had that feeling. airi was clearly uncomfortable near her and lina’s terrible eating habits only seemed to be making it worse. the poor girl couldn’t even start off with a full sentence! in fact, she was staring—no, peeking from under her bangs. well, lina, she told herself. you’re gonna get this girl to talk to you. she cleared her throat and set her bowl down for a moment, resisting the strong urge to smile. just like the children, she thought to herself. she said that it was nothing, but that was what they always said.
“aw c’mon you don’t remember me? ohayashi lina. i'm in your…your, uh…i think it was chemistry class.” lina could’ve sworn it was something like that, but then again, she was hardly ever here, so she couldn’t really judge. ”sump-thin’ like that. ya probably haven’t seen me around much cause i'm not around much.” she grinned and leaned back, reaching into her small brown backpack. slightly frowning, lina fumbled around for the plastic baggie of cookies that she’d brought. it was definitely in here…somewhere. finally grasping it, she took out a golden-brown cookie and handed it to airi. ”cookies always help, ‘specially if they’ve got chocolate in ‘em.” she dangled it in front of airi’s face for extra emphasis, speaking in a singsong voice. ”ya know you wannit~!”

++ taunted sixth Airi blinked. So this girl, Lina, had come over to her, knowing she was a classmate but wasn't sure of which class? Though, the brunette was hardly in any position to say anything about the other girl's memory when it came to the name of a subject she took; after all, she herself couldn't remember the name of the subject she had just taken. Well, it seemed they already had something in common.
At the next statement, she frowned. Even though she disliked schoolwork, she never actually considered not attending classes. Unless she caught some sort of illness. Did the girl before her suffer from some sort of disease? Was that why she apparently failed to attend classes properly? Airi panicked for a moment. Should she say anything?
No no, she thought. It would be rude of her, somehow, no matter how friendly the other seemed to her.
She watched as the black-haired girl reached into her bag for something, suddenly made wary again. Then suddenly there was a cookie, in all its perfect, golden-brown glory, right in front of her. Lina's next words, though not entirely lost on her, barely registered in her mind. The mere mention of 'chocolate' though, made the girl lean forward in her seat, despite her not knowing why it was said.
The cookie was dangled in front of her, just waiting for her to snatch it out of its current owner's hands. And then, the Taunt. It had been done to her before, oh so many, many times, by her older brother. He said he just loved the way she reacted when taunted with sweets, since it was so different from usual. That his actions were fueled only by his desire to see her happy, or some other such thing of equal (non)value. Of course Airi didn't believe a word of it; she loved the boy as much as a girl could ever love her brother as such, but there would always be times when he annoyed her with the typical older brother antics.
In any case, she was irritated, in a playful sort of way. She debated with herself on whether or not to simply take the treat from the other girl's hand or to say something first. In the end, she settled on giving Lina a look that said what she should've out loud: will you give it to me or not?
...
"I do...~" The words, coupled with a small smile, were her response to the Taunt earlier.
So it seemed the 16-year-old couldn't hold back a word or two after all.

lina grinned as airi perked up at the mention of food, eyes trained on the swinging cookie. she was leaning forward in her chair a little, and lina could’ve sworn that was a little drool coming out the side of her mouth…eh. maybe not. but obviously, she had gotten the younger girl’s attention; that much was clear. after all food, especially a heavenly chocolate-chip cookie, was the best remedy, at least in lina’s mind. she smiled softly, remembering the days when she actually cared about school. whenever she’d done poorly on a test, she would always go straight home and raid the refrigerator, consuming everything in sight until she was bloated and happy again.
the girl was still staring at the cookie, but then, she looked up at lina, giving her an almost questioning stare. after hearing her confirmation, lina smiled back. her smile turned into a smirk as she made the motion to put the cookie in her mouth, lifting it in a slow and agonizing arc. well, to be honest, she did want to eat it too, but she had plenty to share. the cookie was nearly there when lina laughed and put it down in front of airi. ”just kidding of course. that’d be too cruel,” she said with a casual wave of her hand.
satisfied, lina returned to eating her own meal, but not before pulling out the bag of cookies from her pack and dropping it with a thud on the table. they were all pretty fresh, having only been made the night before, during the time lina was supposed to be doing her homework. but of course, as always, food came first, and lina had been especially excited since her mom had bought new baking ingredients yesterday.
lina lounged back in her seat, tilting it, and letting it fall again. tilt. fall. tilt. bad habits. shoveling another bite into her mouth, she used her chopsticks to point at the cookies sitting temptingly on the table. ”oo can take mo’ i' oo want.” she let the chair fall back onto four legs with a bang, and then leaned forward on the table, hands still wrapped tightly around the bowl of rice. ”so, ari-chan, tell me. what’re ya doing sittin’ at lunch alone? food is meant to be enjoyed together, y’know?”

++ cookies seventh A smile in return. Wait, now a smirk. The cookie was moving away...
Whaaaaaaat?
So, the older girl thought she could offer her the first cookie she would have had in days, only to eat it herself? How rude! How... how evil! But hatred could not manifest itself on the brunette's face; instead a look of utter sadness formed as she leaned even further to the table in an effort to follow the soon-to-be eaten treat.
Suddenly, she heard a laugh. And the cookie was in front of her again! The moment it left Lina's hands, Airi put down her chopsticks and snatched the snack up, taking a bite almost immediately. She savored the taste, the texture, and took another bite when she had finished the first. This time she really didn't hear what the black-haired girl said.
A small thud. A whole bag of the delicious sweets was on the table now! The 16-year-old's eyes widened again, wondering if they were off-limits. Like that was likely. At least, she wouldn't let it be.
Before she could say anything, Lina spoke, stating that the sophomore could help herself to the cookies. In an instant, the cookie in her hands was gone, popped into her mouth with much haste, and she took another from the bag. She chewed and swallowed, then took a bite out of the new one in her hands. "Uwaaahh~" A soft exclamation of joy before she filled her mouth again.
Then, Airi cringed, from both the sound of the chair hitting the floor again and the familiar way the older girl had addressed her. She had always disliked strangers who acted as though they already knew her well, for one reason or another. Now, she didn't know what to think. On the one hand, she felt uncomfortable, for reasons already stated. On the other, Lina was very nice. She'd given her cookies!
The girl frowned, debating with herself on how she should feel and react. Should she be angry? No, that would be irrational. Afraid? Now, why on earth would she be afraid?? Happy--
Okay, so thinking about it only made the whole matter even more complicated; she was only thinking of the silliest things now. Finally, she settled on 'wary.' Just as she had been earlier.
"I'm always alone, Ohayashi-san..." She murmured, looking at her lunch. Oh, that's right. She had to finish the 'real food' first before dessert. She took up her chopsticks again and ate, looking at the cookies with a tinge of regret. But it wasn't much of a problem; she'd have some more later, if there was still time.
